Jorge Méndez at FENAVIN 2025

From May 6 to 8, 2025, FENAVIN will bring together the twelve most prominent "young winemakers" of the Spanish wine scene in Ciudad Real. Among them will be Jorge Méndez, our head of viticulture and fifth generation of Bodegas Viñátigo, who will participate in a session focused on the impact of terroir and sustainable practices on winemaking.

On Tuesday, May 6, at 1:00 p.m., in the Custodio Zamarra Tasting Room, Jorge will share the stage with other winemakers under the title "Journey to the Interior of the Earth: The Influence of Soil on Wines." In this first roundtable, he will discuss how the minerals and texture of Tenerife's volcanic soils shape the character of his wines, turning each sip into a true reflection of our slopes and craters.

Jorge will present Lomo de la Era, one of our unique single-vineyard wines, born in a vineyard surrounded by rocks and strewn with ash, and will detail its winemaking process. He will explain how the characteristics of Tenerife's volcanic soil—high mineral content, sandy texture, and rapid drainage—influence the organoleptic properties of the local varieties.

Family Continuity and a Vision for the Future

A graduate in Agricultural and Rural Engineering from the University of La Laguna and a Master's in Viticulture and Oenology from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Jorge Méndez represents the fifth generation of his family dedicated to grape growing in Tenerife and the second generation directly involved in the current Bodegas Viñátigo project. His incorporation guarantees the continuity of our winery's winemaking legacy, which combines inherited knowledge and adaptation to the current challenges of the sector.

With an already consolidated present, thanks to the national and international recognition of Viñátigo wines, Jorge brings a renewed vision that ensures the winery's evolution toward a promising future. His work focuses on continuing to explore the possibilities of native varieties and strengthening the sustainable practices that characterize the project. Their participation in FENAVIN 2025 is further proof of how the new generations of Viñátigo will continue to place Canarian volcanic wines on the global winemaking map.
